BK UK - Improve accessibility on BK website
Context
Our website does not currently offer accessibility options for customers who are neurodivergent or who have disabilities. We do not have a legal obligation to do this but there are millions of people who identify as neurodivergent who might well be struggling to use our website.
ReciteMe is a company who offers a range of on-demand accessibility solutions that could support us in conforming to WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines)standards and ensure that the BK website is user-friendly for individuals with disabilities, situational challenges and language support, through customizable options.
According to ICAEW Insights research, in the UK, 15-20% of the population is neurodivergent, with thinking and learning styles that differ from what’s considered typical. This equates to 13 million people, including 700,000 people with autism spectrum condition and two million people with dyslexia. Neurodivergence also includes attention hyperactivity disorder, dyscalculia and dysgraphia (among others).
These numbers are rising due to more accurate and inclusive diagnostic criteria. Autism diagnoses alone have increased 787% in the past two decades and prescriptions for ADHD medication have jumped 800%. We are also experiencing a post-pandemic boom in ND diagnostic referrals.
This implementation will reinforce Burger King UK brand is a company that is investing in Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. By prioritizing Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, we are not just fulfilling a responsibility, we are embracing an opportunity to innovate, connect and grow. Every perspective we include, we amplify strengthens Burger King UK and brings us closer to the guests we serve.
Recite.Me Tech Meeting
On November 18th, we had a call with Recite.Me team to understand how the Assistive Toolbar works.
Recite.Me Floating button can be customized. However, changing colors or font is not available which means the toolbar will not follow the BK color brand guideline.
Recite.Me doesn’t allow customization to ensure uniform service across other brands.
Text speech requests are accessed via API using a cache system, they don’t use CDN.
Integration available via Google Tag Manager, documentation available: Google Tag Manager
Technical analysis
Integration via GTM is feasible; We need to validate that GTM is still active behind the feature flag, but the analysis says we killed it entirely from the code. If we need to put it back, it may take a few more days.
Level of Effort: Total of 2 weeks.
Need to validate with UX Team - in progress (@Fagundes, Silvia )
