BK DE - Pick Up and Delivery Scenarios
Context
BK DE uses RBI Tech’s platform (web and app).
In terms of mobile ordering in the tech platform,
Delivery is available for a subset of stores (~150 BK DE Master Franchisee stores).
Pick Up is not available.
To enable Delivery, RBI built an integration into “SIDES” (previously known as “Simply Delivery”).
When a guest places a delivery order:
RBI sends the delivery order to a SIDES tablet.
SIDES tablet is next to a delivery dedicated POS, located in the restaurant’s kitchen.
Team member manually keys in the order into the POS.
From an RBI standpoint, SIDES is treated as a POS integration. This is important because we only support one POS integration per restaurant.
Note that SIDES has attempted to integrate with Toshiba, but BK DE shared the integration is not reliable.
Delivery fulfillment is done by own drivers. SIDES also takes care of Driver Management.
Team member will assign the order to an own driver. Drivers have a SIDES app which provides delivery instructions.
Note that SIDES has built an integration into UberDirect, which will allow 1P delivery orders to be delivered with UberEats drivers.
All DE restaurants currently use Toshiba as the POS. BK DE is piloting Oracle POS.
Target is to roll out 75 restaurants with Oracle POS by end of 2024. - To be confirmed.
Opportunity
BK DE wants to enable Pick Up to stores that already have 1P delivery and the rest of stores.
We need a solution for Toshiba stores. The solution should not be dependent on rolling out Oracle POS.
Summary
For Oracle POS – in progress: Khumbu as middleware to inject orders into the Oracle POS.
For Toshiba POS:
| Pros | Cons | |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Replace SIDES with Deliverect |

2 | Build integration with Smoothr |

Scenarios
1. Stores with Oracle POS
1.1 Use Khumbu integration (in progress - Loyalty and Pick Up)
RBI already has an integration with Oracle POS (Transactions Services v2) via the Khumbu middleware, leveraging our Partner API. This integration covers Click & Collect.
Project Plan: #2 Enable Click & Collect for Oracle POS
Pilot Store ready End of July.
Note that our Partner API currently only supports one POS per market.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
The Khumbu <> Oracle integration is used in other markets (live in PLK PL, planned for BK UK, PLK CZ, BK PL, BK CZ, BK RO, BK AT). | Unclear how delivery fulfillment management will be handled – likely to move to Deliverect. |
1.2 Pick Up UX options
2. Stores with Toshiba POS
2.1 Replace SIDES with Deliverect
Deliverect is a middleware/integrator partner. They also offer centralized content management and a driver management solution.
Deliverect could replace SIDES. Currently Deliverect does not have a Toshiba integration so we’d need to use a Deliverect tablet. Deliverect are open to building a Toshiba integration.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Deliverect is RBI’s recommended middleware partner. Deliverect might be BK DE’s chosen middleware partner that replaces SIDES. | Non-integrated solution. Restaurants would still require a tablet. However, Deliverect could look into integrating with Toshiba in the future. |
Deliverect is a known platform which RBI Tech is already working with. The integration goes through the Partner API. |
|
Deliverect is working on a menu content integration that BK DE could leverage to centralize content management for aggregators. |
|
2.1 Build integration with Smoothr
Smoothr is a new kiosk provider in BK DE.
They have developed a “Bridge” solution which allows to inject orders into Toshiba. It’s running in about 40 stores.
Smoothr could integrate with RBI’s Partner API to inject Pick Up and Delivery orders into Toshiba.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Integration goes through Partner API. We remove SIDES “custom” integration. | Requires Partner API to be updated to support multiple POS. Dependency on create a capability to Partner API supports more than one POS per market. |
Enables POS order injection, removing manual entry via tablet. | Requires driver management platform (e.g. SIDES) to integrate with our Partner API as a fulfillment provider. |
| Requires Smoothr to integrate with our Partner API to receive orders from the RBI platform. |
2.3 Use Khumbu integration
Khumbu already has an integration via Partner API.
Khumbu could develop Toshiba integration.
